Silver City Brewing // Überfest Imperial Oktoberfest Lager // Bremerton, WA // 8% ABV 28 IBU
Tomorrow is October. Which means we're closing in on the end to the German celebration of Oktoberfest: the 16(ish) day celebration of the beloved king and queen of 19th century Bavaria. And for us beer drinkers, it symbolizes the change of seasons. Oktoberfest is the introduction to Fall, a celebration of community, and Überfest is the catalyst of a seasonal shift. While this Seattle Summer wasn't a scorcher, I indulged in plenty of pilsners, lagers, and saisons. But the leaves have been making their way to yellow, as my palate is getting ready for an adjustment of heavy malt and spice flavors. Silver City's take on an Oktoberfest dunkel märzen is like a brewer's extra strong batch of festbier. And in celebration of their 20th anniversary why shouldn't it be? Silver City stayed true to tradition using whole leaf German tettnang hops and German malt varitals of barke pilsner, barke munich, and melanoidin.
Color: Translucent amber
Smell: Pilsner malt and the Fall spices of cardamom and cloves
Taste: Starts off mellow with the cool drinkability of a lager. Then a wave of sweet, sticky maple, curled up in the warmth of spices, comes up only to finish with a breezy lager taste. And while dark, the clean märzen characteristic cleanses the palate, leaving you ready for more.
Overall: Is this a heavy Oktoberfest lager? Yes. But does it deliver the essence of the festival? Absolutely. Fair warning though - you may fall asleep with a few sips left in your glass. This can knock you out - but only to have sweet autumnal dreams.
Drinking Tips: let it sit out for a bit, or warm in your hands.
Pair With: a warm, salted pretzel and bratwurst with sauerkraut. This beer can stand up to salty and pungent eats and should be celebrated with the most German food possible.
