Ecliptic Brewing // Third Orbit Imperial Porter with Cherries // Portland, OR // 9% ABV 50 IBU
Ecliptic may have celebrated their 3 year anniversary in October of last year, but I still had this glitzy space bottle leftover from a previous haul from my bottle shop. Winter time is porter/stout season and if you know me, you know I'm all about space and the exploration of it. So when I saw the iridescent bottle from a space-themed brewery I knew it was meant to be. The 3rd Orbit was brewed in honor of Ecliptic's third trip around the sun with a "gravity warping amount of cherries", a blend of 7 malts, and Columbus, Amarillo, Chinook, and Cascade hops.
Color: Deep, dark brown with a stout, tan head.
Smell: Roasted coffee and chocolate covered dried fruit.
Taste: Hops begin the profile and meld into dark chocolate and coffee. The specific cherry flavor gets lost, possible mistaken for plum or raisin. But the smooth mouthfeel takes over to end in a creamy, cherry float.
Overall: There's certainly not a gravity warping amount of cherry notes, but I'm happy to have less cherry flavor than too much of it - the malt aids in masking the intensity. The 3rd Orbit wasn't what I was expecting based on the description, but it is still a solid imperial porter. I would have expected nothing less from Ecliptic.
