Seattle Beer Week is in full swing! There are so many breweries and bars participating this year it can be hard to choose which events to go to. But when I heard about the Cloudburst and Bale Breaker collab event, Urban Hootenanny, it was a no brainer. Cloudburst has been crushin' it with their inventive and community-based brewing style. Combine that with hop heavy, Yakima based Bale Breaker, and you're getting the best ingredients from both sides of the state. The event was all about mixing flavors and styles, with a DJ mix of hip-hop and country music. While Bale Breaker had a few guest taps on at Cloudburst, the real reason to make it in was for the collab beer, Country Grammar. A remix of the traditional saison, a generous amount of hops were added including an experimental strain Hop 522.
Cloudburst/Bale Breaker Brewing // Country Grammar Hoppy Saison // Seattle & Yakima, WA // 7.2% ABV 60 IBU
Color: Hazy, deep sunglow
Smell: Bright tropical hops, summer wheat, pale malt
Taste: The hops hit first but then the tropical, melon features and pale wheat come together for a delightful blend of smoothness and bitterness. Before the profile fades out, the hops hit you one more time! A great use of hops in a saison without them dominating the flavor or existing solely in aroma.
Overall: Hops in a saison? A summertime match made in heaven. The collaboration from Western and Eastern Washington represents this state's role in craft brewing: local ingredients and a will to innovate.
