Big Rock Urban // Winter Spice Brown Ale // Vancouver, BC 6% // 13 IBU
The Vancouver neighborhood, Mt. Pleasant, seems to be the hot spot for breweries. While missing out on some other taprooms that were closed, we drove around the district until we found one that was open. Luckily we came across Big Rock Urban. While this brewpub has their brewery displayed behind the bar, the Winter Spice Ale is actually brewed by their parent company in Alberta, Canada.
Color: Deep amber and brown sugar.
Smell: Pie spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice, malty.
Taste: You taste the spices you smell! The malt sweetness lasts on the tongue without being over bearing. It manages to finish clean while still being decorated by the sensations of bold and rich winter spices.
Overall: Winter ales are not over yet! Even with the holidays gone, you can still find solid winter ales with warming spices to make it through the grey winter.
