Against the Grain // Bloody Show Blood Orange Lager // Louisville, KY // 5.5% ABV 17.3 IBU
Here I am again, breaking the rule of my own blog. But in the search of a Halloween beer, I couldn't find anything at my bottle shop from the PNW that wasn't pumpkin. Don't get me wrong - I'll indulge in all sorts of pumpkin treats this season. But rarely is there a pumpkin beer I find good, let alone good enough to blog about. So when I saw the slasher-horror theme on the can of Bloody Show, I knew it was my Halloween brew. First released in 2012, it was concocted and originally brewed with the Danish folk at Mikkeller. Peep the tribute to the Danes with European Jason Voorhees' belt and pin in the artwork. RIP blood oranges, you have served your beer well.
Color: Burnt orange.
Smell: Orange essential oils, freshly dried flowers, pilsner malt.
Taste: Light and bright, with a hint of bitter orange peel. Ends with the signature Czech Saaz hops: crisp and peppery on the tongue.
Overall: The aroma is pleasantly bold with a whiff of of Autumn. But the flavor profile is superbly light and drinkable; crisp and aromatic as the air on Halloween.
